To the Top of the World for Education
A Journey of Learning, Leadership, and Possibility
What happens when education leaves the classroom and ventures to the edge of the world?
To the Top of the World for Education is the story of a belief I’ve carried for decades: that learning becomes most powerful when it is lived, not just taught. This book chronicles an expedition to the High Arctic—not as an act of conquest, but as a catalyst for curiosity, connection, and shared discovery.
Pulling a sled across frozen terrain beneath shifting auroras, navigating uncertainty, and confronting both environmental and personal limits became more than an expedition. It became a learning environment—one that connected students, educators, and communities around the globe in real time. From classrooms thousands of miles away, learners followed the journey, asked questions, analyzed data, shared their own local perspectives, and co-created meaning alongside the expedition itself.
At its core, this book is about education without borders.
It explores how storytelling, technology, and place-based learning can transform how young people see the world—and their role in it. It reflects on leadership forged through humility, collaboration, and adaptability. And it invites readers to rethink where learning can happen, who it can include, and how deeply it can matter.
This is not a guidebook for polar travel. It is a narrative about possibility.
About trusting learners with real questions.About honoring Indigenous knowledge and lived experience.About designing learning experiences that are immersive, human, and meaningful.
Whether you are an educator, student, parent, school leader, or lifelong learner, To the Top of the World for Education is an invitation to imagine education as an expedition—one where curiosity is the compass, experience is the teacher, and the world itself is the classroom.
Because sometimes, the path forward in education begins by heading north.
